Ian Levitt
Founder/Senior Attorney
Ian Levitt is the founding and managing partner of Ian Levitt Attorneys, and has 25 years of post-qualification experience under his belt. Representing clients in a wide range of matters, both locally and internationally, he has substantial experience in corporate and commercial transactions, and criminal, family and commercial litigation. Ian has a BCom Law, LLB and HDip Tax Law degree from the University of Witwatersrand and his practice areas include: Commercial Law, Corporate Law, Litigation and Arbitration, Criminal Law, Family and Divorce Law.
Approximately three months after being admitted as an attorney, armed with a Higher Diploma in Tax Law, Ian commenced practicing for his own account. At that stage, he was one of the youngest attorneys with tax qualifications to start practicing for his own account in Johannesburg.
Driven by a passion to fight for client’s rights in the face of overwhelming challenges in the criminal justice system, he has been instrumental in building the firm’s reputation as the go-to law firm for assisting victims of crime to bring about successful prosecutions (to the extent possible and allowed in law).
His success is evidenced by the highly publicized landmark judgment in the “Frankel Eight” case where the Court ruled that children and adults would be allowed to lay charges of sexual and indecent assault at any time after they were abused - overturning the 20-year prescription period which the applicants had challenged. This case is seen as a massive advancement of both women and children’s rights, and a victory for victims of abuse.
He also received recognition by the African Legal Awards in 2017 by winning Attorney of the Year.
Ian’s success in his relationships with clients is built on the premise of being straightforward, clearly communicating legal opinions, and genuinely concerning himself with the welfare and success of his clientele.
